[incubating] Bamboo: An alternative material for the future

The purpose of the course is to educate students about the potential of bamboo as an alternative material for various products, furniture and architecture. The course is divided in two sections the first section will be theoretical and will give an understanding on various aspects of bamboo as a plant, its treatment and various uses. The second section will be design oriented and will elaborate on various aspects of using bamboo for construction. At the end of the course students will have to design a small project.

Course objectives:

  • To understand the properties of bamboo as an alternative material

  • To look at various uses of bamboo in the past and the present

  • To study the ways in which bamboo can be utilised for architecture

  • To develop a design system suitable for bamboo
